Today, the ANIEME (National Association of Furniture Industrialists and Exporters of Spain published the Report on the evolution of foreign Spanish furniture trade in 2008. This report shows that the international sales of Spanish furniture reached 1,581.5 millions of Euros, this being 7.2% less than in 2007.

According to the President of the ANIEME, -Juan Carlos Muñoz-, “This reduction is a result, amongst others, of a weaker internal consumption which not only Spain, but also other European countries such as France, Portugal or Italy are suffering. Especially the traditional markets reduced their purchases of Spanish furniture during the last year, whilst emerging countries such as Russia, Poland, Rumania or Saudi Arabia have increased their imports of Spanish furniture.”

Juan Carlos Muñoz also pointed out that exportation is without doubt one of the fundamental ways of sustaining Spanish businesses: In many cases it saves them from the plummeting of sales on the national market which was around 40% at the end of the financial year.
|
“A 63.7% growth in a country such as Saudi Arabia and 74.7% in Rumania means that Spanish furniture is highly competitive and that Spanish businesses have managed to adapt their offer to the different markets in which Spanish furniture is well received.”

On the other hand, Spanish imports of foreign furniture have been reduced in recent times. In 2008, Spain imported furniture for a total amount of 2,664.7 millions of Euros, i.e. a reduction of 7.2%.
This change in the evolution of Spanish imports of furniture is more than obvious: Whilst in 2008 imports dropped by 7.2%, they increased by 30.8% in 2008.
The ranking of suppliers remains similar to that of 2007. China continues to be Spain’s main furniture supplier with 23.1% of the total and a drop of 5.6%. It is followed by Italy with a reduction of 19.9%, Germany (-17.7%) and Portugal (-10.1%). The growth registered by Rumania (103.9%) stands out and it has now reached tenth place in the ranking of furniture suppliers to Spain.
