Chris Speller, Group Director for Cityscape

Dubai to host 8th `global´ architectural awards

2 de Agosto de 2010

Visionary designs throughout emerging markets to be recognised by panel of international experts

Projects with outstanding creative design, performance, sustainability and vision throughout emerging markets in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and across Asia are in contention for top honours at the first Cityscape Awards for Architecture in Emerging Markets.

The winners of this year’s awards will be recognised for their outstanding achievement on both built and planned projects around the world. A distinguished panel of industry experts will announce the winners during a gala dinner at The Grand Hyatt, Dubai on 5 October 2010.

The Cityscape Awards for Architecture in emerging markets are being held in conjunction with the 9th leading real estate investment and development event Cityscape Global, which runs from 4-7 October at Dubai International Exhibition Centre. The deadline for entries is 15 August 2010.

“Emerging markets are providing much of the dynamism in the global real estate markets at the moment. Economic sentiment is more bullish than in the more mature Western markets and it is against that backdrop of confidence and optimism that we will celebrate excellence in architectural design,” said Chris Speller, Group Director for Cityscape.

Entries will be separated into built, or completed, projects and future projects, which must either have the client named or planning permission granted, across the commercial / mixed use, community (including religious and public buildings), leisure, residential and tourism, travel and transport sectors.

“In line with the increasing international participation in the Cityscape Global exhibition and conferences, we are experiencing a significant increase in this year’s entries from overseas emerging real estate markets”, added Speller

This year will also see six special categories, including the Young Architect Award, open to students of architecture, landscape, urban design, interior design or other design related programmes, in the UAE.

“We want to encourage local students and provide a platform to showcase their talent. Whether they have a flair for designing public spaces, new buildings or entire cities, this award aims to find and reward the most innovative plans,” said Speller.

The remaining special awards comprise;

The Environmental Award – to the one built scheme that delivers best on environmental issues

The Islamic Architecture Award – for the project which shows particular empathy and understanding for Islamic culture and context

The Master Planning Award – for the best master planned community

The Cultural Heritage Award – for the scheme that best preserves the intangible attributes that are inherited from past generations, maintained in the present and bestowed for the benefit of future generations

The Industry Choice Award – the most popular project as voted for by visitors of Cityscape Global

Following the 15 August submission deadline, the top 10 entries will be selected by the judges and displayed at the Awards Gallery during the Cityscape Global Exhibition for final assessment. For more information about the Cityscape Awards and how to enter, log onto www.cityscapeglobal.com/awards.

Winners of the prestigious Cityscape Dubai 2009 Awards included Qatar Science and Technology Park in Doha, Masdar HQ in Abu Dhabi and the Dubai Metro, as well as projects in Bangladesh, Malawi, Libya, Oman and Kazakstan.

The Cityscape Global Awards are sponsored by Gaggenau, Boomerang Lab 23 and AGC.
